In fact, rectal thermometers are recommended for use in children 5 years and younger. Pediatricians and hospitals use rectal thermometers because they are the most reliable option for determining the severity of your child’s fever. Rectal thermometers will alert you to dangerous temperatures in your child.
Rectal thermometers are easy to use compared to other. You start by shaking the
rectal thermometer down below the 97° F line (36.1° C). Cover the tip of the rectal thermometer with a lubricating jelly. Carefully place your child on his or her stomach and spread their buttocks while gently inserting the rectal thermometer until the tip is covered. Try to keep your child from becoming scared by playing music or by placing a toy in front of him to play with. After you have inserted the rectal thermometer, hold your child’s buttocks together to keep it from falling out. Hold it in place for 3 minutes or in accordance with its instructions.
Reading the rectal thermometer is easy. Use the line of mercury; each line represents 1 full degree. Short lines are read as 0.2 degrees. If you have a digital thermometer (which is now the number one choice for many parents), simply read the temperature on the front. If your baby’s temperature is 100.4° F or higher, make sure he is not dressed too warmly. Just getting out of a bath or crying also raises a baby’s temperature. If one of these factors come into play, wait 30 minutes, then retake his temperature. If the rectal thermometer still shows a high temperature, call your physician immediately.
Before storing your rectal thermometer, make sure it is thoroughly cleaned. You can clean rectal thermometers with rubbing alcohol. If you have the old fashioned glass thermometer, make sure you keep it tucked away in a safe spot. The mercury in glass thermometers is a toxic substance that can pose a threat to you and your child’s health. If a glass thermometer was to break or you want to get rid of it, contact your local health department for instructions on how to properly dispose of it.
