A sitz bath is a medicine free solution providing relief to the discomfort of hemorrhoids, fistulas, anal fissures, episiotomies and other infections. A sitz bath (also called a hip bath) is hydrotherapy that increases the blood flow to the pelvic and abdominal areas.
Sitz baths have become extremely popular in hospitals and are especially given to women after childbirth.
A sitz bath is a plastic tub that fits over the toilet for easy sitting. It is used for healing, hygiene or relief purposes by allowing your hips and buttocks to soak in water or saline solution. You simply fill the tub with warm or cool water and sit. Most sitz baths come with a solution bag and tube. The bag is used by filling it with water and letting it hang from a hook that is higher than the toilet. A tube that is connected to the bag is hooked onto the sitz bath allowing water to continuously flow. To stop the flow of water, just clamp the tube, which is also provided. The continuous flow of water allows the water to stay clean and warm in the tub.
A sitz bath will not overflow as they are designed with a vent to let water escape. Generally, you are supposed to soak the affected area in a sitz bath for 10 to 20 minutes. After you have soaked, use a clean towel to pat the area dry and repeat several times a day or as often as recommended by your doctor. Make sure you clean the sitz bath after every use to ensure it stays clean.
Be careful when using your sitz bath. Although they pose almost no risk, some people have felt dizzy due to the blood vessel dilation from sitting for a long period of time. The transition from sitting for approximately 20 minutes to standing have caused people to feel light headed.
