Here is a scenario that has either happened or is bound to happen to us all: The doorbell rings. To your surprise you find your nitpicky, smiling mother-in-law through the peep
hole. Before her presently surprising arrival, your child was happily scattering her toys all over your living room. There are two ways to deal with the situation; one, threaten your child’s happiness if she does not quickly clean up the mess while you distract grandma or two; tip toe back to the living room, throw all of the toys into the toy chest and tell grandma you were in the bathroom and thanks for waiting… Whatever the excuse, a toy chest will help make your messy living room spotless within seconds. It is a great hiding space for your child’s mess.
There is no doubt that a toy chest is a great way to hide all of your child’s toys. However, there are lots questions on their safety. When finding the right one for your family, follow these safety precautions:
- Read the warning labels. There is important information in the warning labels about the proper precautions to take to ensure your child’s safety.
- Pay attention to the lid. There have been a lot of cases where children have died or became brain dead from lids falling on their head’s or necks. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, most of these cases involved children under the age of 2. However, you can never be too careful. You want to make sure you purchase a toy chest with a lid that does not fall onto your child. Therefore, look for toy chests with lids that will hold themselves open in any angle/position it’s placed in or find one with a detachable lid. Make sure the lid of the toy chest does not have a latch.
- Look for toy chests with ventilation. The Consumer Products Safety Commission has had reported deaths from children who were trapped or fell asleep inside toy chests. To ensure your child’s safety, make sure there is enough ventilation in the event of such emergencies.
